In line with the publication of the 51th production version of TabShop Retail Point of Sale App last week, TabShop was also submitted to the SAMSUNG 2013 App Challenge. Between September 5 and 30 November 2013 SAMSUNG opened an App challenge specifically for Galaxy Note HD Apps.
TabShop version 51 comes with some major improvements and a new possibility to add stock updates directly within the inventory screen. The sorting of items was improved and some extra reports were added within the daily Point of Sale business report.

In his latest talk about SAT solvers at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU), Computer Science pioneer Donald E. Knuth gave a deep and quite emotional insight about his life-long, epic work on the book ‘The Art of Computer Programming’. The Art of Computer Programming, aka TAOCP represents the one and only global reference on algorithms, their analysis and computer programming in general and is the standard work for all computer scientists worldwide.
Donald E. Knuth talked about his recent chapter within TAOCP on SAT solvers and how fascinating these satisfiability problems as well as the derived problem and number patterns are.Knuth invited the audiance to ask all kind of questions, which span detailed explanaitations on his love for TEX as well as for his CWEB language, to quite personal topics, such as Prof. Knuth’s love for organ music and that he might also write down his own organ composition. During his trip through Austria, Prof. Knuth also had the chance to play on famous local organs, such as the organ within the monastry of St. Florian where Anton Bruckner was playing in 1850.
To summarize, Prof. Knuth gave a fascinating and very inspiring talk about his actual work and it seems as if there will be a lot of topics and chapters within the coming years!
He also shared an interesting advice with his audience: “If you are not fascinated and interested in what you are doing, then you are the only person to blame for!”
I just got the information to announce this years regional Open Commons Congress in Linz Austria. The Open Commons Kongress 2013 OC13 is the second event on Open Commons approaches and culture in Linz, organized by the Johannes Kepler University Linz together with the Open Commons Region Linz. This year the overall topic is ‘Learning and Living with Digital Commons‘ It will take place in following location:
apps4austria is a federal Austrian Challenge to create mobile Apps by using Open Government Data archives. These archives contain all kind of information that could be used by a wider public community, such as location of waste collection centers, tourism information, public statistics or public building information.
The challenge emphasises the design of apps that are using these kind of publicly available information and visualizations. Its even possible to submit concepts and ideas without concrete implementation. The submission of apps4austria is due to 1.march 2013!
Today, i received one of the first samples of the new Arduino Educational Starter Kits by RS and i have to admit that beside it’s cool design this educational starter kit is one of the most exiting collections of electronics i have ever tested. It comes in combination with an Arduino Projects Book that gives a detailed description of each Arduino experiment on more than 170 pages. For each project, Massimo Banzi, co-founder of Arduino gives an online video instruction, in which he explains the details. The tutorials start from the very beginning, how to set up your Arduino development environment and explain in simple incremental steps how to build more complex examples, that include all kinds of sensors, motors and even a LCD display (all part of the Arduino Starter Kit).

At this years Ars Electronica technology art festival (Klangwolke), the audience enjoyed the performance of a Quadcopter Swarm, consisting of 50! Quadcopters (AscTec Hummingbirds) synchronized together to fly and form shapes like one single organism, which in fact is a world record. The quadcopters were equipped with led lights in different colors to perform ambient light effects during the motion. The so called ‘Cloud in the Web’ performance was programmed by the Ars Electronica Futurelab and Ascending Technologies GmbH. The firmware of the standard AscTec Hummingbird Quadcopters was modified slightly to enable this synchronized art performance.
Connecting Light is a sensor networked, digital art installation along Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site. The Connecting Light installation consists of hundreds of large-scale, light-filled balloons transmitting colors from one-to-another, creating a communication network spanning over seventy miles. Visitors are invited to send messages to this sensor networked light balloon chain along the wall. The installation is open to the public from Friday, August 31st to Saturday, September 1st.
